PORTICA – from a “small hall” to major fulfillment player in 50 years
Kempen. Almost unnoticed in the shadow of the pandemic, PORTICA GmbH recently celebrated its 50th birthday. In 1971, the company was one of the first to offer logistics,
warehousing and management of advertising materials as a service to its customers, with 25 employees at the time. In the course of its development, it has become one of the leading fulfillment providers on the German market. PORTICA now employs 160 people at four locations. At the time of its founding, marketing logistics was still in its infancy. Accordingly, the company started with a hall that covered around 3,000 square meters. “This is also how our company name came about, which is derived from the Latin term for ‘small hall'”, explains Angela te Neues, Marketing Manager at PORTICA.
Success was not long in coming. At the end of the 1970s, the company integrated sales promotion services such as cashback and reward campaigns as well as mailings into its portfolio. Mail order services – now e-commerce – were added as a third mainstay at the end of the 1980s. In this way, the company has grown continuously over time.
Today, PORTICA employs 160 people at four locations and has an operating area of 19,000 square meters. The company processes
- more than one million financial transactions,
- more than 100,000 e-mails and telephone calls,
- more than 60 different cashback campaigns, reward campaigns or sweepstakes
- 2 to 3 millions dispatches.
Customers include Bayer, Canon, Grünenthal, Janssen-Cilag, Kaspersky, Kärcher, Opel, Panasonic, Suntjens and Underberg.
The fulfillment service provider relies on the 50-strong team of its subsidiary GEDAK GmbH to handle IT tasks.
Managing Director Martin Wielens: “Due to COVID 19 restrictions, we are unfortunately unable to celebrate a proper party with our workforce on our fiftieth. Many of our employees have been with us for decades and were also trained by us. In some cases, we even have entire families working for us, which shows well our regional ties.”
The Mittlerer Niederrhein Chamber of Industry and Commerce is also pleased that PORTICA has been successful for so many years with great competence and commitment. With a certificate, it wishes the company continued success and all the best for the future.
Not resting on laurels
PORTICA’s e-commerce competence will be further expanded. In the future, customers will benefit from optimized interfaces to marketplaces and carriers, individual packing processes (keyword: Unpacking Experience) and improved returns processing.
In marketing logistics, new webshops are being implemented which will be used as customized order portals for clients’ sales representatives or dealers in order to ensure, among other things, a convenient and time-independent ordering process.
In addition, PORTICA is working together with GEDAK to update and optimize the system landscape in order to continue to provide its clients with high-performance and more secure systems as well as additional functions for efficient process handling. For example, the campaign management tool “WebCampaignManager”, which is successfully used for sales promotions, will be relaunched and equipped with new functions.
